WRITING

My mother used to mail me newspaper clippings advertising poetry contests. You submit your poem and they send you a letter telling you they’re going to publish it, so don’t miss this chance to have your writing immortalized in a sturdy casebound volume for $49.95 plus shipping. In 1995 I sent a poem and they sent me the letter and I threw it away. Then they sent me a publisher’s proof and they had typeset the poem all wrong, so I wrote them back saying they didn’t have my permission to publish it. They put it back the way I had it and sent me a thousand dollars and two copies of the book and a magnetic poetry set.
